Choose the right day care situation for your family
There are many day-care options for working parents in Iowa and resources to help with your decision. Don’t forget to check with co-workers, family, friends and those in your church and school circles. It’s important to choose the best situation for your child and your family, and there are many factors that should weigh into your decision.
In home or center?
Choosing between a childcare center and an in-home provider may be your first decision. There are quite a few differences. Generally, day-care centers offer more staffing and structure while in-home care offers a chance to bond with just one caregiver. Whether it is better for a child to be with an in-home care provider or at a commercial center depends on the quality of the caregivers, the programs offered, and the needs of the child. Cost and location may also be factors.
Visit the provider
Visiting the provider in the childcare environment is a good way to understand how the provider operates and interacts with children. Tour all areas where your child will spend time.
Ask questions
You might ask about the number of children in the provider’s care and food menus. If it’s an in-home setting, are there pets in the home? Does the provider assist in potty-training? How are children disciplined? What types of activities are offered? What educational skills are taught?
