Carpooling

- Some employers like University Hospitals in Iowa City offer carpooling options for their employees. If that’s not available for you, just team up with a co-worker or friend to share the commute /Gazette file photo

Whether you’re “Going green” or trying to save money in a tight economy, carpooling might be an option to consider. You can share the costs of gasoline, parking expenses and wear and tear on your automobile with others who are headed to or near your same destination.
Getting Started
If you’re looking for co-workers to commute with, check with your employer. They may have a “ride share” board or an online carpooling database.
Typically, carpooling databases will collect your name, contact information, geographic area, work hours and whether you’re willing to drive, be a passenger or both. You might even be able to list preferences such as ”no smoking in my car,” “no eating in my car,” etc.
If no carpooling initiative is offered at your workplace, ask about starting one.
You can also carpool with friends to the grocery store, day care or other places. Ask your pals if they’d be interested in taking turns driving.
