Humboldt County is often called “the land of two rivers” for its location

between the west and east branches of the Des Moines River. And perhaps it was this prime location that caused an interesting bit of the county’s history.
Originally created in January of 1851, Humboldt County was legislated out of existence in July of 1855 and its land was divided up by neighboring Kossuth and Webster counties. In February of 1857, however, the area (now made up of 12 townships) was reestablished as Humboldt County. Dakota City, was deemed the county seat where a mere fifteen years later they erected the Humboldt County Courthouse.
And while Dakota City is the county government headquarters, the city of Humboldt, is the county’s hub of activity. It is here that residents can enjoy the new Humboldt Family Aquatic Center.
Plus there are a variety of special events throughout the year to entertain residents and visitors alike. The annual Humboldt Arts Festival, presented by the Humboldt Area Arts Council takes place in downtown Humboldt each June.
Its also where the Humboldt County Fair, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2008, is also held each year towards the end of July, featuring chuck wagon races, mud volleyball and paintball tournaments, and a tractor pull.
During the holiday season, Kiwanis Christmasland (sponsored by the Noon Kiwanis Club of Humboldt and Dakota City since 1981) delights children of all ages. This animated holiday attraction includes 14 lighted scenes including Santa’s Carpenter Shop, Santa’s Candy Emporium, the Nativity and much more.
Perhaps one of the biggest tourism draws countywide are the Humboldt County Barn Quilts. The project, which began in early 2006 as a way to preserve and showcase Humboldt County’s agricultural heritage, now includes nearly 50 quilts on barns and city buildings all across the county.
Humboldt County’s largest employers include The Chantland-MHS Company, Hog Slat Inc., and Hy-Vee Food Stores.
