Located in northwest Iowa, Buena Vista County is a rural, agricultural area. Beautiful Storm Lake, the growing county seat, is located in the south-central portion. Storm Lake is the fourth largest glacial lake in Iowa, spanning over 3,200 acres and considered the region’s best for walleye fishing.

Opportunities abound for outdoor recreation, with lakeshore parks and campgrounds, biking and walking trails, two marinas, and public access for boating, fishing, and swimming. Experience the city’s array of ethnic cuisines, and take a short trip out of town to visit the country’s largest wind turbine complex.

Take a self-guided tour of Buena Vista County Wind Farm, one of the largest wind energy projects in the world. More than 360 turbines, 208 to 213 feet tall, sit atop Buffalo Ridge, generating enough electricity to serve 114,000 households.

King’s Pointe Waterpark Resort and Lodge in Storm Lake offers an indoor/outdoor waterpark and 100-room lodge.

Enjoy music, theater, arts and athletics at Buena Vista University  in Storm Lake. Experience the soothing sound of the waves lapping the shoreline of Storm Lake, the warmth emanating from the red brick buildings that dot the campus, and the welcoming feel of the lush green 60-acre landscape.

Another interesting site in Buena Vista County is Santa’s Castle. Begun in 1962 with the purchase of four animated elves Santa’s Castle is now regarded as one of the largest displays of antique, animated Christmas characters in the world.

For a unique step back in time, visit the 1875 Victorian Harker House in Storm Lake. Built in French (Mansard) Style, this home impresses with its open porches, beautiful brick walkway, and imposing widow’s walk. The interior is complete with the original furniture and photographs belonging to the Harker family.
